Before starting: To import a 3D model into Altium, make sure that its corresponding footprint has already been imported. Find out how to do that here.

For Altium 17, follow these steps to import a 3D model into Altium.

  1. Open the footprint in Altium.

  2. Click Place > 3D Body. A 3D Body pop-up window will appear.

3. In the 3D Body dialog, select Generic STEP Model in the 3D Model Type section, and then click Embed STEP Model. In the browser dialog, find the file (.STEP) you downloaded.

4. On the footprint layout, left-click at the center of the footprint to place the 3D STEP model on the footprint.

For Altium 18 and later, follow these steps to import a 3D model into Altium.

  1. Open the footprint in Altium.

  2. Click Place > 3D Body. A Choose Model window will appear

 3. Find the file (.STEP) you have downloaded and click Open.

4. Place the 3D model on the footprint. If you need to make adjustments to the Rotations (X, Y, Z) or Standoff Height, you can do so from the Properties section in the right side panel.
